2010 Nessies Fifth A meet

A busy week in Nessie-Land began with the Coaches Long Course All-Star meet on Tuesday, featured our final B Meet on Wednesday and final A Meet on Saturday and ended with the always-exciting B Relay Carnival at Tally Ho on Sunday.

The 5th week of the MCSL season is usually an odd one due to the PVS Championship meets that take place over that weekend.  Many team’s top older swimmers are not able to compete for their MCSL teams in week 5.  This affected both the Nessies and CCRA as both were missing several key swimmers.  But this also opened up an opportunity for younger swimmers to really shine, and despite falling to a deep and talented Stingray squad, many Nessies really stepped up.  Some swimmers competed  in events they rarely, if ever, compete in.  So Nessie fans got to see Laura Garcia and Seth Toplin swim Breaststroke this week, and Kevin Tsai swim Butterfly.  And there were plenty of time drops as well.

Drops of more than two seconds were registered by Joseph Ibrahim (Free), Jerry Johnston, Ashleigh Popera, and Laura Dromerick (all in Back), Leah Fine, Zhenya Lutterman and the aforementioned Laura Garcia (all in Breast), and Nick Tondravi in the challenging IM.  And our 8&Under Girls continued their stunning improvement, with both Kate Goldberg and Stephanie Zoltick recording big drops in both Breast and Fly.  But the big time drop of the week goes to Elisa Zoltick, who followed up her 3+ second drop in Free with an amazing 7+ second drop in Fly.  In a few short weeks, the Nessies have gone from not even being able to enter an 8&Under girl in Fly to having 3 solid Fly swimmers.  As for swim-ups, Julien Folch didn’t merely swim up as a 13/14 boy – he scored 10 points and swam the B relay at the end.

Event winners included John Popera, Nicole Kronfli, Ashleigh Popera, Bridget Dromerick, Madeline Schupak, Natalie Kronfli, Eric Eig, Marina Laprade (2 wins), Daniel Garcia (3 wins), Emily Hall (3 wins), and Austin Cole (4 wins).  The girls continued their undefeated run the Open Medley Relay as well.

At the beginning of the week, 6 Nessies competed in the Long Course All-Star meet.  Congratulations to Daniel Garcia, Madeline Schupak, Alexa Popera, Laura Garcia,  Bridget Dromerick and Natalya Ares.  Daniel, the only 7 year old in the field, finished 3rd in the 8&Under Boys Breaststroke.  Madeline finished 2nd in the 9/10 Girls Breaststroke, and Laura finished 1st in the 13/14 Girls Backstroke.  These races are in a 50 meter pool and are twice the distance of the normal MCSL events – a real testament to the talent and dedication of these swimmers.

The season isn’t over yet.  It’s Divisional week.  Next Saturday morning, the Nessies will return to Calverton to compete against the top swimmers in H division.  Then on Sunday night, we have our annual Banquet, always a highlight of the season.

If you are wondering how the Nessies who broke all those records can swim so fast, part of it is due to the fact that they, along with other teammates, swim year round with local club teams. We are fortunate to have some of the best club programs in the country in the Metro DC area. There are teams offering a wide range of programs for swimmers of all ages and level of commitment. Coaches can offer guidance on what program might be right for you, so please talk to them if you are interested. You’ll be amazed how much your child will improve even with a limited program of winter swimming. And with the improvement comes better fitness and a love of swimming that can last a lifetime.

Welcome to the Home Page of the Nessies!

The Nessies compete in Division H of the Montgomery County Swim League (MCSL).

Drop by the pool some Saturday morning in the summer. Find out why all those people are shouting. Watch some of the best young swimmers in the county compete in a wide variety of races. See the famous Nessie Bugaloo cheer at halftime. The sides of the pool seem to close in as everyone there, from 6 year olds to 18 year olds, parents and grandparents, siblings and friends, gather round to cheer for the final relay races. You may find yourself hooked.

The Nessies swim in June and July as part of the Montgomery County Swim League (MCSL). We strive to give each young swimmer a fun and rewarding summer experience. Our goals are to provide excellent coaching so that each swimmer may improve to the best of his or her ability, and to promote good sportsmanship and team spirit. Where else can kindergarteners and college freshmen be teammates? Each week during the season, there is a divisional meet Saturday morning and non-divisional meet Wednesday evening. These Wednesday evening “B” meets allow all swimmers, regardless of ability level, to take part in competitive races, see their times improve, and win ribbons.

Guided by an experienced, enthusiastic coaching staff, our swimmers cheer for each other and learn from each other. You’ll often find Nessies just hanging out together by the pool, and at pep rallies, movie nights, and other events. And at the season’s end, over 120 Nessies and their families attended our annual awards banquet at the Bolger Center, with plenty of good food, good music and big trophies. The evening featured a slide show documenting the season, and a special tribute to graduating seniors. We’re planning lots of excitement for 2010.
